History

Originally a land grant given to Captain Florentia O’Sullivan, the 2,340 acres included not only the island that carries his name, but also became what we know today as Mount Pleasant. In 1696, 51 new settlers arrived and were allotted several hundred acres in the area that would become known as Christ Church Parish. Fighting off several attacks by the Spanish and the French, the settlers persevered and by 1770, Andrew Hibben had begun a ferry charter that was the first to connect Haddrell’s Point with the city of Charleston.
On September 24, 1860 a public meeting was held in Mount Pleasant that produced the first secession resolution of the state. Mount Pleasant was also the secret training ground for the nine-man crew of the Confederate submarine CSS Hunley. It was from Breach Inlet in 1864 that this small vessel was launched to attack and sink the Housitanic. Twenty years after the war, Mount Pleasant was literally a small town with 783 residents and four miles of street were laid with shells, becoming known as a pleasure resort for the planters of Christ Church and the well to do from Charleston. Travelers came by steam ferry until the Cooper River Bridge was built in 1929 and Mount Pleasant continued to grow, today standing a model town for visitors and residents alike.
